Mount Spurr is a volcano 78 miles northeast from Anchorage. You can see the peak from Anchorage on a clear day.
In early 2025, the Alaska Volcano Observatory noticed signs that this volcano may erupt.
WHY DO SCIENTISTS THINK MT SPURR MIGHT ERUPT?
Steam coming from the top
Small earthquakes around it
WHAT'S NEXT?
More steam, more earthquakes, and other changes are expected before an eruption. This means we will have some warning. Scientists say this:
“We’re looking for a particular signal called volcanic tremor, that one often sees before... an eruption,” Haney said on March 20. “We have not seen that yet.”
Volcanic tremors started three weeks before the June 1992 Spurr eruption, and two months before Redoubt erupted in 2009. (Source: ADN)
